Responsibilities

A senior analytical position in the company’s hub of economic thinking; think McKinsey or BCG-type work, but for one global company, and you get to be home most nights (light travel)

  • Five primary types of analysis performed | You don’t have to come to us knowing how to do them all, but you should be solid in one of the first two:
    • Valuation – Company & asset valuations + synergies of product, asset, & capabilities between entities
    • Capital Modeling – NPV / IRR models with key drivers & sensitivities for Capital Investment Decisions
    • Market Analysis – Microeconomics; supply/demand/cost curves à pricing mechanisms & forecasts
    • Optimization – Modeling business metrics to find the best use & mix of Product & Asset Portfolios
    • Contract Analysis – Forecasting raw material & energy markets & maximizing optionality in contracts
  • Economic Thinking – Koch’s unique blend of finance, microeconomics, & marketing that leads to superior results
  • Exposure – Much of this team’s work is for the VP & up level with active projects in every operating region
  • Thought Partnership – Key concept to make the work better; it’s common to grab another analyst/manager, etc. to help talk through & frame up projects/analyses/concepts on ubiquitous glass white boards
  • Development – We develop strong economic thinkers to deploy into our businesses & matrixed capabilities

The Key Requirements

Traits & habits are as important as technical skills

  • Leadership:
    • This is one of two Sr. Analysts who sit on a team with three more junior Business Development Analysts – Sr. Analysts are expected to serve in several key roles:
      • Lead Analyst – an experienced financial thinker & modeler who can frame up projects quickly, move them along with less direction, and can be trusted with the bigger initiatives
      • Thought Partner – an experienced mind to help analysts move projects/analyses along
      • Mentor – a more senior level analytical resource who can help the team manager build strong economic/financial thinkers to deploy into our global businesses
      • Gatekeeper – an experienced financial & project resource who, with some internal training, can help guide project teams through our capital process with the right questions & examples

  • Technical Skills:
    • Financial Acumen – Working knowledge of the P&L and, ideally, the ability to run it down to cash and calculate return sensitivities for CapEx under consideration
    • Quantification – Ability to take qualitative concepts and turn them into quantitative measures
    • Modeling – Ability to quickly turn raw data into useful, dynamic information to improve decision quality
    • Advanced Excel – This is a foundational skill and it is difficult to be successful in this role without it

  • Key Traits & Habits:
    • Commitment – You get the job done & can be counted on to take the big, time-sensitive projects
    • Initiative – You can take the kernel of a project or analysis and run with it
    • Analytical Courage – You’re willing to make logical assumptions & derive information to advance projects
    • Fluid Thinking – You’re able to use financial statements as tools to model business decisions & sensitivities
    • Sense Checks – You check your work before submitting to ensure accuracy & that others aren't incurring opportunity cost correcting simple mistakes, but are using your work to advance our thinking
    • Mental Models – You don’t just perform analysis, you internalize the thinking your analysis is advancing, to build broader context that allows you to take on bigger, more complex projects more efficiently next time
    • Organizational Agility – You build relationships with key resources & prefer to call or meet with them to get a richer context around the information you’re requesting (emails are for follow ups & informing)
    • Humility – You welcome & solicit respectful challenge to make your work better; you’re good, but not afraid to say “I don’t know” and can listen to & learn from others; and you’re not above the occasional data slog to find good information
    • Enthusiasm – You’re excited about the work & look for the stretch assignments that grow your competence
